Our Work
Action Update
During these turbulent times at the federal level, we have concentrated on New York climate policy where we can have the greatest impact, namely legislation that will implement the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act of 2019. The law mandates greenhouse gas reductions and transition to renewable energy. New York is falling behind on these mandates. Legislation and policy reform are needed.
Home and building heating is the greatest contributor to GHG emissions in NY. With that in mind, our Climate Committee has joined with Renewable Heat Now, a campaign comprised of groups from across New York State, working towards reducing the demand for fossil fuels and making home heating more affordable.
In 2025 we pushed the state legislature to to repeal the "100 foot rule", ending the ability of gas companies to bill their customers for the cost of expansion, saving ratepayers up to $600 million annually. A major win for clean heat and lower bills for New Yorkers!
In 2026, Renewable Heat Now is advocating for a state budget that includes funding for renewable energy and energy efficiency policies that reduce our reliance on costly, polluting fossil fuels! Our focus will be on securing funding for programs that directly reduce energy bills for low and moderate income New Yorkers through energy efficiency upgrades and electrification.
